Software Developer (Cloud & Data)

WSP is looking for an experienced Software Developer (Cloud & Data) to join our industry-leading Intelligent Infrastructure team. We provide technical professional services to transport clients throughout the UK and overseas to deliver tangible value through technology enabled change.

As a WSP Software Developer (Cloud & Data), you will play a key role in technical delivery while also leading tasks within a team to provide quality assurance, consultancy, and advisory services on client-facing projects. A little more about your role…

• Design, build and maintain secure, scalable software, cloud and data solutions using industry best practices, ensuring security and compliance.
• Scope, estimate, and take ownership of delivery for assigned tasks and projects, managing workload and dependencies to deliver within agreed timeframes.
• Engage with clients and stakeholders to understand their needs, capture requirements, and ensure a shared understanding of project objectives
• Lead technical tasks and work packages, coordinating activities, managing dependencies and providing technical direction to ensure successful delivery of outcomes.
• Perform quality assurance reviews of project documentation or consultancy deliverables, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and alignment with best practices and client requirements
• Support and maintain new and legacy applications, cloud services and data platforms, ensuring timely and effective resolution of issues while maintaining clear communication with stakeholders.
• Provide consultancy and advisory services, guiding clients on software engineering, cloud adoption, data architecture and technical best practices.
• Input to the continuous improvement of practice and standards within the team
• Maintain and develop your own expertise by staying current with emerging technologies, pursuing relevant certifications, and through continuous learning
• Coach and mentor junior colleagues, providing guidance, support, and constructive feedback to help them develop their skills and confidence

• This role sits within the Intelligent Infrastructure business and will form a key part of the growing Data, Architecture and Solutions Capability, which is our centre of excellence for digital skills. The Capability team provides a community of colleagues working in and around technology to help you deliver effectively and support your professional development through training, mentoring and opportunities to really stretch your capabilities.
• You'll work as part of an Agile team of developers, testers, analysts and transport specialists to design, build, deploy and maintain cloud-based applications, data solutions and digital services. Using technologies such as Python, .NET, Azure, DevOps and AI capabilities enabled through our Microsoft partnership, you'll deliver innovative solutions that help make journeys greener, safer, cheaper and faster.
• We operate a hybrid working policy and expect colleagues to spend time on client sites and collaborating with colleagues face-to-face, as well as working from a local office. We have offices across the UK.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…

• Experience designing, building and supporting enterprise-scale applications and services using ASP.NET and Microsoft Azure, supported by relevant certifications and qualifications. Experience with Python would be highly beneficial.
• Experience designing and implementing cloud-native solutions and data-driven applications, including integration, transformation and management of data within cloud environments
• Experience working across the Azure platform, with the ability to independently deliver cloud-based solutions whether involving applications, data pipelines, DevOps tooling, automation, integration or other Azure services
• Experience of semantic modelling, metadata management and enterprise data architecture, applying these practices to support scalable, governed and reusable data solutions.
• Experience applying secure software development practices, including OWASP guidelines, identity and access management, secrets management and basic threat modelling.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think creatively and develop practical solutions to complex technical challenges.
• Experience working within Agile delivery teams and deploying applications and services through DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines in production environments.
• Demonstrable experience of testing throughout the software delivery lifecycle, including unit, integration, ETL, regression and end-to-end testing.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience working directly with clients and customers to provide credible technical advice and guidance.
• Experience conducting quality assurance activities and technical reviews to ensure the reliability, maintainability and compliance of software, cloud and data solutions.
• Experience providing guidance and applying best practices in cloud architecture, data architecture and software engineering.
• A degree in an analytical discipline such as Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, Data Science, Social Sciences, or equivalent industry experience.
