Job description

Location:

Hybrid UK, at least 3 days per week on site in Kidlington, with occasional travel to Exeter

Schedule:

  • Lab system changes happen outside lab hours, usually on a Sunday or Monday, about once or twice a month.

Visas:

Unfortunately, we are not in a position to offer visa sponsorship for this role.

About the role

Our pathology lab runs on a lot of connected technology: a lab information system, scanners, automations, servers and integrations with our cloud diagnostic platform. Many teams work on these systems. We need one person to own them.

As our Lab Systems Engineer, you’ll be that owner. You’ll keep the lab’s systems available, up to date and well connected, and you’ll make sure every change reaches the lab safely, with testing, validation and a rollback plan in place. You’ll work with IT, information security, integration, product, technical support and our software suppliers, and bring their work together into one approach.

This is a hands-on role for someone who likes ownership. You assess before you act, and you’re comfortable digging deeper on your own when a problem gets complicated. It isn’t a helpdesk role, and you won’t need to be an expert in wet-lab processes.

What you’ll do

  • Own the lab systems end to end: the lab information system, scanners, automations, servers, network, databases and the integrations with our cloud platform.
  • Keep systems current and secure: patching, upgrades, versioning and data migration, automating repetitive work wherever you can.
  • Own the release cycle for lab systems: impact assessment, testing, validation, rollback planning and the go or no-go decision. Your first priority will be mapping and baselining what we have, then making upgrades to our core lab systems safe and predictable.
  • Lead incident response: restore the service, trace the problem end to end to its root cause, and run post-incident reviews so it doesn’t happen again.
  • Manage our lab software suppliers, agree priorities and support availability, and hold them to agreed dates.
  • Plan downtime and change windows with the lab so turnaround time is protected.
  • Put monitoring and alerting, capacity planning, disaster recovery and business continuity in place, and keep the documentation and evidence our accreditations need (UKAS ISO 15189, ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials Plus, NHS DSPT).
  • Put data integrity and patient safety first: apply access control and data protection in line with GDPR, working with IT and information security.

What you’ll bring

  • Hands-on experience configuring, running and maintaining a LIMS or LIS.
  • Experience in a hospital, pathology or clinical laboratory, or another regulated healthcare setting (e.g. ISO 15189, ISO 27001, GDPR).
  • Experience integrating lab systems with cloud or SaaS products and other systems (e.g. HL7, APIs).
  • Hands-on troubleshooting across infrastructure, networks, applications, databases and integrations, with a track record of patching, upgrading and migrating live systems safely.
  • Experience managing software suppliers and holding them to delivery dates.
  • A reliability mindset: monitoring and alerting, incident response and learning from incidents, rollback and recovery, and good documentation.

It would be great if you also have: experience with digital pathology or medical imaging (whole slide scanners, DICOM, PACS), HL7 instrument integration, or SQL troubleshooting.
