Environmental Manager
Job description
The Geotechnical Sub Alliance (GSA) is at the forefront of the Sizewell C nuclear power station development - one of the UK’s largest and most exciting infrastructure programmes.
We’re responsible for preparing the foundations of the entire site: designing and constructing cut‑off walls, retaining structures, soil improvements and more. Using advanced geotechnical engineering and world‑class construction technologies, this is a rare opportunity to contribute to a national project that will shape the UK’s clean‑energy future.
The Role
To lead all environmental management activities for the Sizewell C project, ensuring full compliance with legal, contractual and client requirements across all construction phases.
The role will develop and implement environmental strategies that protect the environment, minimise impacts, and support the delivery of major ground engineering and civil works. You will drive continuous improvement, ensuring environmental performance is embedded within project planning, operational delivery and subcontractor management, and act as the key point of contact for regulators, external stakeholders and the client on all environmental matters.
What You'll Be Doing
• Lead the development, implementation and ongoing monitoring of the project Environmental Management System (EMS) in line with ISO 14001 and client requirements for Sizewell C.
• Ensure all environmental obligations within the contract, DCO requirements, permits and licences are identified, understood and met by the project team and subcontractors.
• Oversee environmental risk identification, assessment and implementation of effective control measures across all project phases, including enabling works, main civils, ground engineering and GSA partner interfaces.
• Provide expert advice and technical guidance on environmental matters including ecology, water management, land use, waste, materials, noise, air quality, and carbon.
• Lead environmental incident management including investigation, reporting, corrective actions and communication with senior leadership and relevant external bodies.
• Establish and maintain strong working relationships with regulators and statutory bodies including the Environment Agency, Natural England, local authorities and other stakeholders.
• Lead engagement with subcontractors and supply chain partners to ensure consistent compliance and best practice across interfaces and scopes.
• Define and monitor environmental performance indicators and produce accurate monthly and quarterly reports for senior leadership and the client.
• Lead the delivery of environmental training, briefings and awareness sessions to ensure project and subcontractor teams understand their responsibilities.
• Develop and implement project-specific environmental improvement plans aligned to biodiversity, sustainability and carbon reduction commitments.
• Oversee and coordinate third-party environmental surveys, assessments and specialist consultancy input.
• Ensure environmental controls are embedded into site activities including monitoring regimes, method statements, permit systems, inspection programmes and audits.
• Carry out regular site visits to verify compliance, coach operational teams and support effective implementation of environmental controls.
• Ensure lessons learned and improvement opportunities are captured, shared and embedded across the project team and supply chain.
• Support bid submissions, technical queries and stakeholder engagement activities linked to environmental management.
• Represent the project in environmental forums, client meetings, audits and regulatory inspections.
What We’re Looking For
• Degree-level qualification in Environmental Management or a related discipline.
• ISO 14001 Auditor qualification (or equivalent).
• Strong understanding of environmental legislation and regulatory requirements within major infrastructure / construction environments.
• Proven experience delivering environmental management on large-scale or complex projects.
• Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with experience working with regulators, clients and local/community representatives.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce accurate reports under time pressure.
• Proven ability to influence behaviours and standards across project teams and the supply chain.
• Experience managing environmental specialists, advisors and external consultants.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical capability, with a continuous improvement mindset.
• Candidates must have the legal right to work in the UK at the time of application.
